Embracing Nature: Maria Catarina Chapel

In 2020, Canalli Arquitetura unveiled the Maria Catarina Chapel, nestled within a preserved forest environment in Irati, Brazil. Situated amidst century-old araucaria trees, the chapel shares its location with Casa Pinho, embodying a harmonious integration with its natural surroundings. Led by architects Fernando Antônio Canalli and Natalia Lachowski Canalli, the chapel’s design principles prioritize minimalism, openness, and a seamless connection with the landscape.

Design Concept

The Maria Catarina Chapel is a testament to minimalistic design, characterized by clean lines and a judicious selection of materials. With a total area of 30 square meters, the chapel exudes a sense of tranquility and serenity, inviting both individual contemplation and collective gatherings. The choice of materials, including exposed concrete and locally sourced wood, reflects the architects’ commitment to durability, sustainability, and low maintenance.

Integration with Landscape

Guided by the position of the sunset and the verticality of the surrounding araucaria trees, the chapel’s orientation and layout create a striking visual impact. From afar, the chapel’s silhouette resembles that of a cathedral, evoking a sense of grandeur and monumentality. Yet, upon closer inspection, its minimalist design and modest scale convey an intimate and introspective atmosphere. This juxtaposition of containment and expansiveness underscores the chapel’s unique character.

Artistic Elements

At the focal point of the chapel, where the sun sets, a pure silk canvas adorned with a watercolor painting by Fernando Canalli serves as a captivating centerpiece. The painting depicts the Espírito Santo Paranista, incorporating symbols of pine and pine trees that symbolize the identity of the State of Paraná and the surrounding farm. This artistic element adds a touch of spirituality and cultural significance to the chapel, enriching the visitor’s experience.

Conclusion

The Maria Catarina Chapel stands as a testament to Canalli Arquitetura’s commitment to blending architectural excellence with environmental sensitivity. By seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings and embodying principles of minimalism and sustainability, the chapel serves as a serene sanctuary for reflection and contemplation amidst the tranquil beauty of Irati’s forest landscape.
