The concept of skipping introductions and repetitive content arose from Netflix’s observation that approximately one in seven users manually fast-forwarded through series within the initial five minutes. This prompted the consideration of introducing skip forward and skip backward buttons in 10-second increments, aiming to cater to user preferences and streamline content consumption.

Cameron Johnson, Director of Product Innovation at Netflix, highlighted the rationale behind introducing skip forward and backward functionalities. While skip backward 10 seconds addresses moments of distraction or missed content, the idea of skip forward stemmed from personal experiences, such as wanting to bypass lengthy opening credits and dive straight into the narrative.

Adoption and Expansion

Initially launched in a limited capacity with the ‘Skip Intro’ button available in 250 series across the US, UK, and Canada via the web interface, the feature garnered positive feedback. As a result, Netflix expanded the availability of the ‘Skip Intro’ button to TV platforms in August 2017 and mobile devices in May of the following year, ensuring a seamless viewing experience across devices.
