The Jing’an Community Pool House, situated in the heart of Shanghai’s Jing’an District, holds a significant place in the collective memory of local residents. Once a bustling outdoor pool that served the community for over three decades, it had recently fallen into disuse, leaving behind a tangible void in the neighborhood.
A Reflection of Tradition
Surrounded by the charming labyrinth of lane house communities, the pool house stood as a beacon of communal activity amidst the historical architectural fabric of Shanghai. However, the once vibrant waters had turned stagnant, casting a somber reflection of the changing landscape. Recognizing the importance of preserving this cultural landmark, the design team embarked on a journey to breathe new life into the space while honoring its rich heritage.
Balancing Preservation and Innovation
Debates ensued regarding the fate of the pool—whether to restore its former glory or reimagine its purpose in a modern context. Eventually, a delicate balance was struck between preservation and innovation. Instead of maintaining the water element, the decision was made to repurpose the space into a tranquil retreat for local residents. The original structure, including lifeguard towers and pool ladders, was meticulously preserved, paying homage to the site’s storied past.
Embracing Sustainability and Craftsmanship
Central to the project was a commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship. Shou Sugi Ban, a traditional Japanese technique of charring wood to enhance its durability, was chosen as the primary cladding material—a nod to both tradition and innovation. Collaborating closely with local artisans, the team experimented with reclaimed wood sourced from a demolished school on the outskirts of Shanghai, breathing new life into forgotten materials.
Bridging the Past and Present
Accessing the second floor and rooftop patio, guests are guided by an external staircase that seamlessly integrates with the building façade. The staircase, adorned with vertical wooden louvers, serves as a transitional space, connecting the interior with the lush garden below. This harmonious blend of function and aesthetics encapsulates the essence of the Jing’an Community Pool House—a testament to the enduring spirit of community and renewal.
