Embracing Ambiguity: The Concept of Wynyard

Fusion of Identities

Wynyard, situated in a quiet back alley of Yeonhui-dong, presents a unique blend of influences — a Korean owner-chef with culinary expertise from Switzerland and Australia, French modern dining with artistic freedom, and an old building nestled in a culturally rich neighborhood. T-FP embraced this amalgamation and conceived the space and brand with the theme of ‘ambiguity’.

Addressing Challenges

Challenges such as location and budget were pivotal in shaping Wynyard’s design. Located in a residential area with limited fine dining options, and constrained by budgetary limitations, the focus shifted towards delivering an experience that transcends mere gastronomy. The concept of ‘ambiguity’ was emphasized by integrating elements from both Eastern and Western cultures, as well as juxtaposing raw and refined aesthetics.

Design Philosophy

The interior, predominantly crafted from larch plywood, exudes a distinctive texture that balances natural and artificial elements. This deliberate contrast creates a visually striking ambiance that complements Wynyard’s eclectic identity. Furniture designs were curated to reflect the concept, boasting unique shapes and aesthetics.

Multi-Level Experience

Wynyard offers a dual experience, with coffee served on the first floor and fine dining on the second. Both levels feature larch plywood finishes, reinforcing the cohesive design language throughout the space. While the overall lighting scheme maintains a subdued ambiance for intimacy, strategic illumination highlights specific areas to accentuate the culinary experience.
