The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater recently celebrated its 65th anniversary with a star-studded opening-night gala at the New York City Center. Among the notable attendees was actor Cynthia Erivo, known for her role in “Wicked” alongside Ariana Grande. Erivo’s outfit for the evening perfectly embodied the concept of quiet luxury, showcasing elegance and sophistication.
The Chic Ensemble
Erivo opted for a sleek and sophisticated look from Valentino’s Resort 2024 collection. She wore a black turtleneck crop top paired with a high-waisted maxi skirt. The ensemble was adorned with sparkling embellishments and featured a flowing train, adding a touch of glamour to her attire. Her choice of a two-strand pearl necklace elegantly wrapped around her neck complemented the overall look. Additionally, she accessorized with pearl and hoop earrings, accentuating her bejeweled manicure.
Star-Studded Attendance
Apart from Cynthia Erivo, the gala also saw the presence of prominent figures like honorary chair and “The View” cohost Sunny Hostin, actor Bianca Lawson, and model Damaris Lewis. Hostin stunned in a ruffled tulle gown, while Lawson exuded holiday vibes in a green velvet suit paired with a lace-trimmed top. Lewis brought a unique style with a fringe miniskirt and a zippered patchwork jacket, completing her look with a braided bun and pointy-toe pumps.
Tribute to Artistic Excellence
The highlight of the night was a performance of Ailey’s iconic masterpiece “Revelations,” featuring a live choir and orchestra. Additionally, there was a special dance tribute dedicated to iconic Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison, choreographed by Hope Boykin. The tribute, celebrating Jamison’s 80th birthday, was set to live renditions of “Feeling Good” and “Both Sides Now,” performed by Cynthia Erivo herself.
Annual Holiday Engagement
The gala marked the beginning of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s annual holiday engagement at the New York City Center, scheduled from Nov. 29 to Dec. 31, 2023. The five-week program includes performances of “Revelations” alongside the world premiere of dances titled “Me, Myself and You” and “Century.”
Cynthia Erivo’s appearance at the Alvin Ailey Gala not only showcased her impeccable fashion sense but also highlighted the cultural significance of the event, bringing together art, music, and dance in a celebration of excellence.
