A 33-year-old man, Liu Kuei Liang, has been sentenced to prison for forging his mother’s signature to sell her luxury cars and settle debts accumulated from nightclub expenses.
Forgery and Deceptive Sale
In August 2022, Liu forged his mother’s signature on sales agreements, deceiving a car dealership into believing that she had authorized the sale of her Rolls-Royce Dawn 6.6 V12 and Mini Cooper SE.
Guilty Plea and Sentence
He pleaded guilty to forgery in a Singaporean court and was handed a 12-week prison sentence on March 22, 2023, according to court documents.
Ultrawealthy Parent-Child Dynamics
This case sheds light on parent-child relationships among the ultrawealthy, revealing a six-figure fallout resulting from Liu’s actions.
Debt Accumulation at Nightclubs
Liu had amassed debts at “diao hua” clubs, where patrons tip female dancers by purchasing sashes and garlands of flowers, with garlands starting at around $37 and sashes costing hundreds of dollars.
Desperation and Forgery
In a bid to raise cash, Liu falsely claimed his mother’s authorization for the car sale, even providing a friend’s number as his mother’s to confirm the transaction, which resulted in a payout of $110,000 from the dealer.
Mother’s Forgiveness and Legal Proceedings
Despite initially reporting the crime, Liu’s mother forgave him, repaid the deposit to the dealership, retrieved her cars, and attempted to withdraw her police report.
Judicial Perspective
District Judge Brenda Chua noted that Liu had abused his mother’s trust and caused harm to both the car dealer and his mother, leading to his 12-week prison sentence.
